Gli Abiti dei Veneziani

During the photographic campaign carried out at the Museo Correr for the Fototeca Regionale (1975-1979), the celebrated volumes of Gli Abiti de' Veneziani di quasi ogni età con diligenza raccolti e dipinti nel secolo XVIII, illustrati dal pittore di origine fiamminghe Giovanni Grevembroch (1731 - 1807) were also entirely reproduced by the Giacomelli studio in Venice.

The four volumes had been donated to the Museo Correr library by the heirs of Pietro Gradenigo, Grevembroch's patron, who commissioned the work.

The Abiti de' Veneziani brings together illustrations of the official and popular costumes at the time of the Serenissima, starting from the highest political and religious offices (i.e. the doge and the patriarch of Venice), nobles, ambassadors and knights but also often more unusual, fascinating figures, such as sailors, peasants and street vendors, not to mention the traditional carnival masks.

Grevembroch accompanied the plates with texts describing the individual costumes, frequently supplemented with historical comments and annotations, which are included in Giacomelli's photographs.
